Movies Turned TV Shows!! OUT OF SIGHT & ABOUT A BOY!!
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
I don’t know. I think it’s strange when you turn a movie into a TV show. I’d rather see a series of films that really explore a set of characters, because there’s a chance you’ll have the same creative people in place from film to film. When you scale something down and take it to TV, you risk losing those elements which were part of whatever alchemy made the thing work in the first place.
Take, for example, the idea of OUT OF SIGHT becoming a weekly series for ABC. Could happen. They’re developing it right now with Jersey Television and Universal Television. Jason Smilovic is writing the pilot, and he’s listed as a co-executive producer, along with Scott Frank, who wrote the script for the movie.
Don’t get me wrong. I love OUT OF SIGHT. But part of what I love is the script. Part of what I loved what Soderbergh finally hitting his stride in a major way. Part of it was the cinematography and the exquisite editing. And a big part of it was the way George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez struck sparks that were just mesmerizing to watch. It was chemistry. It was magic. I wish Jersey and Universal and everyone else all the luck in the world, because they’ll need it if they hope to have lightning strike twice like this.
Same thing with Fox and Universal working together to turn ABOUT A BOY into a sitcom with Matthew Carlson set to write the pilot. Hugh Grant worked so well in that film precisely because of the baggage he carries as a performer. Finding someone who works that well again is going to take an alignment of the stars.
Still... neither premise is a bad one, per se, so we’ll definitely keep our eyes open for more on both projects as they come together...
