WB Joins Blu-ray Fray. With the release of “Training Day,” “Rumor Has It,” and “Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang” on Blu-ray next week, Warner Bros. becomes the first studio to release the same titles on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

BURBANK, California (July 14, 2006) –Warner Home Video (WHV), which distributes the largest film library of any studio, today announced that it will launch its first wave of titles on Blu-ray Disc. On August 1, WHV will release four titles – Training Day; Good Night, and Good Luck; Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang; and Rumor Has It – on the Blu-ray format to support the initial roll out of Blu-ray players in North America. Training Day and Good Night, and Good Luck will be available for $28.99 SRP and Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang and Rumor Has It will be available for $34.99 SRP. Future waves of Blu-ray launch titles will be announced in the coming weeks.

We’ll be keeping a close eye, of course, on how these releases will be priced from format to format.
HD-DVD Only On Shelf With DVD/HD-DVD? The HD-DVD/DVD Combo versions of “Rumor Has It” and “Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang” have been out a for a bit, but now – as hoped - it looks like cheaper HD-DVD-only versions will join them on Aug. 1. The combo sets, meanwhile, will continue to be issued with other titles (as the calendar below demonstrates).

Many had issues with Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (hitting HD-DVD today), but few would argue that its lovingly rendered retro sci-fi cityscapes and machines are not a perfect fit for HD release.
