Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Legendary has finally set the stage for a big screen prize fight unlike any other in recent memory. Deadline reports that they have shifted Kong: Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros, which clears the path for them to build to King Kong Vs. Godzilla.
The move would come after Gareth Edwards finishes up his little space movie and directs an even more monster-filled Godzilla 2. They've already teased much of Godzilla's iconic villains (including Mothra and Ghidorah) playing a part in the sequel.
I've heard the rumor of Skull Island being set in the 1970s is 100% true and I've also heard that it's not going to be like any version of King Kong we know. Don't expect Brie Larson to be Fay Wray. From what I understand, this isn't a monkey/pretty lady love story.
So, let's break it down a little bit, shall we? Since it doesn't have to be a love story I'm willing to bet that the Kong we meet in Skull Island is substantially bigger than the Kong we're used to. He's going to have to be if he's facing off against skyscraper-sized Godzilla.
Just how much bigger I have no idea. I'm only guessing as it is, but I think he's going to be pretty massive. There's also the time difference between the two movies to consider. Maybe Kong starts as young and grows bigger over the decades between the 70s and when Godzilla awakens. Or maybe we have a Son of Kong situation brewing.
The real question is are they going to make Kong Vs. Godzilla a straight up fight between the two monsters or will it turn into a remake of Destroy All Monsters with all the new creatures introduced in Godzilla 2 (and maybe some from Skull Island thrown in for good measure)?
All I know is Jordon Vogt-Roberts is assembling a hell of a cast, including Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Hawkins and the rumored John C. Reilly and Samuel L. Jackson. I'm excited at the prospect of him bringing us a much different version of the big ape than we've seen before and excited to see how that cast plays into it.
What do you folks think?
