It’s been a running joke since the Disney/Fox merger that all of these Fox characters were Disney princesses now, including Deadpool. The number one name I’ve been seeing talked about as a new Disney princess is Anastasia. The animated “Anastasia”, starring Meg Ryan and John Cusack, is perhaps one of the most underrated Fox animations out there. The animation was beautiful, it had some very charming and beautiful songs, great character development. Some of the scenes were just so great, however, it wasn’t without its problems. The villains were downright obnoxious at times, and the climax was lackluster.
This is one of my most favorite scenes from the 1997 animation of “Anastasia”:
I thought a remake might bring the movie justice, but it looks like this new live-action adaptation is going to be different. It will be a “re-imagining of the classic story in which Anastasia Romanov escapes through a portal when her family is threatened by Vladimir Lenin and finds herself in the year 1988.”
1988? Anastasia gets leg warmers?
Brandon Routh (“Superman Returns”, “Arrow”) has joined the project to portray Anastasia’s father, Czar Nicholas. I’m looking down through the cast on IMDB. There also seems to be a character labeled as “Steve from Burger King”. Uuuuughhhhhh. I’m rubbing circles on my temples as I acknowledge that this won’t be what I was hoping for at all. They’re filming it in Kentucky. I guess it looks like Russia in Kentucky when it snows?
Blake Harris is directing, based on his own screenplay. Producers are Armando Gutierrez, Eli Lipnik, Peter Lees, and Bret Jones. Filming is currently on pause after the 1988 portion was already shot in Kentucky during the Summer. They will resume shooting in April for the 1917 portion.
This project is a production between Swen Group and Conglomerate, not Disney. I may still get my live-action adaptation of the Fox animation yet!
