yeah yeah..another freakin enviroflick to scare us into thinking we're the ones that are causing it and we'll be destroyed by it. Oh lovely the oil company bad men are back, Segal tried one of these and yeah it sucked too. Meanwhile we've got winter storms in California early. It's 80F in Texas, global warming, what's that?

Drew we watched this last night also on DVD. Anyway I love Larry Fessenden's films. The Last Winter is great. Sometimes the direction was a little flat. I dunno? Maybe something to do with cameras he was using. But overall it's a strong film and heart felt. Reminded me of early Peter Weir...

is already on DVD in the UK which means that if its getting a cinema release in the US its probably crap.

Amen brother! Great review, all the better for not giving anything away. Damn, this film looks gorgeous. The somewhat different, slightly longer trailer on Fessenden's own site sucked me in from the get go - the sound, the music (windswept snowy landscapes). Instantly you're transported to another environment - another world. Perlman is just hands down "the boss" he looks like he grew out of that environment (not just some pretty-boy actor dressed up tough trying to make an impression - these people, all of 'em look like they "belong" to the world Fessenden's showing us). I don't expect that there'll be an ending that will neatly or perfectly tie this one up - I just want to go and see it on a screen for the chance to just experience it so I can say in ten years time, "yeah, I was there, it was great". Cheers Fessenden - this is the guy I'd like to see Hollywood showering cash upon sometime soon.

I saw The Last Winter last week and it was great. Fessenden's best, so far. I really think this might be the breakthrough film for him. All the stars seem to have aligned on this one: great cast, good writing and timely story.

And it didn't help that the theater was freezing. Fessenden came to the showing I was at on Friday. Basically just popped in to say thanks for the turnout, then he had to split for a radio thing. Whatever, anyway, he did make good use of the space on screen. I kept feeling like something was going to happen even in the "safe" moments just because of the way he framed it. A couple of predictable moments, I even saw one scare coming, but that was cuz of the trailer. Not bad, though. Kind of want to wee Wendigo now.

I need to go back and rewatch Wendigo again. I know that The Last Winter was definitely better. So far its my second favorite movie of the festival behind only Spiral. http://tinyurl.com/pv8do

There was one about an Arctic outpost whose members went nuts and bumped each other off- infected by some bacteria or parasite that had thawed from the ice- ancient or possibly alien. The ep started with Mulder & Scully watching static-y b&w video feeds from the outpost- sort of a "captain's log", with the guy going increasingly paranoid & crazy. Have not seen this flick, but it sounds suspiciously derivative in theme. By the way, the X-Files ep was creepy as hell, as I remember it.

It's the same genre but different. Last Winter continues the themes set up in Wendigo. Eco-Horror isn't new. But try it, it's good.
