Of course, they already get a lot of appreciation from fans. But when you really consider how hard it's going to be to replicate Shatner's intangible charm and charisma--you simply can't have the career he's had without actually being special--it makes you appreciate him all over again. To me, that's the main reason that Picard is Picard and Sisko is Sisko, etc--there's just no replicating Shatner. Same goes for Nimoy and the rest, too. This Pine kid looks like he has the look, but what are the odds that he has the look and the style? That's the big danger with this flick--if it's just the Smallville version of Star Trek, why even bother making it into a movie? Hopefully, it's much more than that and we'll all be knocked out. But what a huge challenge.

I've been a trek fan for a long time, i even tolerated Voyager and Insurrection, not to mention the first 2 years of Enterprise, but i've never understood the obsession wih going back to the early days. TOS cast can't be replaced, no matter what caliber actor replaces them. There's never going to be the same sort of charm they had back then. Trek needs to go forward, with a bit more grit to it like they had in the last few years of DS9 where people had to do things they didn't want to do in the perfect federation world. I really am trying to get excited about this but with the rumours i've heard about the storyline and with what abrahm's had planned for superman, i just can't. Another thing i don't understand is why Shatner can't be back. I know they said he died in Generations but if the rumours are true and the timeline is being changed from the very start, surely there's a a to get him in?

I can honestly say that nothing they do is going to match the magic of the original for me, so I really am just going to open up to whatever they can come up with. Trek is dead, and it can't get deader at this point. They've already raped the corpse with several lifeless Next Gen movies, so I just have to let go of any preconceived notions I have and see what they got. Blow up Vulcan, cast Kirk with an actor who seems (at least in this photo) like as shoe-in for Pike, use that horrible time travel gimmick yet again--whatever. I'm becoming too tired to get worked up anymore, just make something and then I'll know how I feel about this new attempt to revive a franchise I once loved above all others. Chances are, it'll never compete with what it was to me once, but I hope it'll be interesting nevertheless.

James T Kirk is a babe loving roast beef eating pure space cowboy and needs to be played by someone who doesn't look like the guy decorating my neighbors bedroom. It's bad enough they have a sissy boy playing Spock but not Kirk.. please not Kirk.
