... a couple of days ago. I can't remember what site I read it on (dammit). But apparently Golden Compass passed $300 mil. overseas and that was what made it possible. I think it would be smart to make The Subtle Knife, keep the budget a little lower, distribute to fewer theaters in the US, and the same amount of theaters overseas but not sell distribution rights this time. It stands to actually be profitable if, this time, if the studio (now WB) is smarter.

Golden Compass and the rest of His Dark Materials suck ass...
by anchorite
Apr 29th, 2008
12:51:04 PM
His Dark Materials was such a monumental waste of my time and money. Whenever I read or hear of people praising the series I have to laugh.

The storytelling is god-awful (no pun intended) and frankly quite hateful. The characters are entirely unlikable, with even the little hero and heroine coming across as the brattiest of snot-nosed brats. And it fails on almost every conceivable level, save for one: being completely hateful toward religion and those that believe in God. In that respect it succeeds admirably.

Philip Pullman, the bastard who wrote the puerile tomes, is such an angry atheist and a wannabe intellectual, I'm surprised he hasn't just offed himself in the hopes of proving his point.

It's commendable to want to push the envelope of the established characteristics of children's literature. The problem is, his ideas are either boring or inane (and incredibly offensive), and his attempt to express those ideas on the page exhibits some of the most incompetent storytelling in ages.

I didn't bother going to see the movie because the books irked me so. I understand they omitted or changed a lot of story that was so hate-filled toward religion and the Catholic church. Even so, the film has largely been regarded as a failure. Even with the presence of a high-caliber cast and expensive production values. Apparently Pullman's storytelling is far worse than even I gave him credit for. Failure suits him well. Maybe he'll be driven to write another book in the series, going farther this time. I mean, after all, he didn't quite get the priest to sexually molest Lyra or Will last time.

How funny. I just found out that he HAS written a new book, called Once Upon A Time In The North. Hearing him describe it, it seems that he has decided to focus on Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison. Good choice, as those are two of the best characters in the books.

I am sure it won't be cool at all, though, as he will undoubtedly feel the need to throw in several scenes where Lee and Iorek have some Brokeback Mountain moments.

Maybe Pullman and J.K. Rowling should compare notes as she has posthumously made Dumbledore a homosexual wizard. Hey, she can write a book with Pullman, and they can have Harry and Lee and Iorek and Dumbledore all snort a couple of keys of Dust and have a great big sex orgy. I hope they don't forget to invite Dobby and the little fairy spies from HDM.

previous comments about how His Dark Materials is about "killing God" and that it tries to "undermine the basis of Christian belief".

When the movie was coming out, he said, "As for the atheism, it doesn’t matter to me whether people believe in God or not, so I’m not promoting anything of that sort."

Right. That's why he wrote His Dark Materials. Because it doesn't matter to him that people believe in God, that they spend their lives believing in what he considers theocratic nonsense.

Pullman is a coward. He caves under pressure from film studios and when he realizes that he has undermined his own career because of his hateful rantings about religion and his disdain for those who practice it. What a sad excuse for talent.

rather, he goes out of his way to say the "God" that the people of the various worlds believe in is nothing more than a pretender, a fraud. He then kills that character off by it blowing away into dust. I mean Dust.

Don't try to shut me up by painting me as a homophobe or a Bible thumper or a crazy conservative. There's nothing hasty about my posts. I have been thinking poorly of Pullman's writings for years. And I think Rowling's an idiot who caved to PC pressure. That's why she threw in the bit about Dumbledore being a homosexual AFTER killing him off and finishing the books. Especially AFTER making many hundreds of millions of dollars (pounds, Euros, what have you) off of her series. Why stop at Dumbledore? Why not say that Harry and Ron were secretly buggering each other in the Shrieking Shack all those years?

So maybe I should STFU but I suspect his caving in and downplaying the anti-Christian theme of his book was due to pressure from New Line telling him to keep it on the down-low lest it impact ticket sales. In retrospect he should have maintained his stance because it ended up bombing in North America after all.

I don't give a crap about Miley Cyrus but Disney, the media and assface housewives are all in a tizzy over a photograph which amounts to nothing. She's had to apologize to stem the backlash when deep down we all know she shouldn't have to apologize for a damn thing. Who cares? Kids in third world countries are dying due to food shortages as I type this and some asswipe Disney executive and right-wing idiot housewife are in a tizzy over a 15 year old girl's bare back? Have they not been down to a beach lately?

It sounds to me like Pullman was turned into an apologist as well for no other reason than he's shilling a product and he needs to keep his corporate backers happy.

Node, no, he doesn't acknowledge that...

Unless you want to consider his notion of "Dust" as the higher being. But you can't really do that because he goes out of his way to make it seem that it isn't a higher entity at all. He says that Dust is reliant on humans and humans are reliant on Dust, so it's more of a symbiotic relationship. And ultimately he likes that relationship because there's no pesky moral judgments to be made. The more humans experience in life, the more Dust they collect; the more Dust they collect, the higher their state of enlightenment and happiness. It's all a veiled attempt at discrediting value judgments and the implications that come with having a moral code.

It's all a big mess, really, but the one thing that IS clear is his disdain for religion and those who practice it. It seems to me that you are all on-board with him in that regard. And you are entitled to your opinion, of course. And so is Pullman.

The difference is, you're expressing your opinions on a TB whereas Pullman has written a series of books, one of which was turned into a big-budget box office failure of a movie.

Pullman's been making lots of money off of his hateful and disdainful notions for years, ready to make anti-religious comments and quick to call the church a fraud, doing what he can to undermine Christian philosophy.

He's been proudly proclaiming himself a self-styled atheist theologian and a deeply principled proponent of humanism and atheism who is pioneering a bold, brave new world in children's literature. Bully for him.

But now that he sees that cash cow heading for the slaughterhouse, he wants to pass himself off as a kinder, gentler Philip Pullman so he can make money in the future. His supposedly deeply-held beliefs have seemed to vanish as quickly as his publisher's advance. Like I said, he's a bigger fraud than any religious believer he looks down his nose at.

Although in the same day care they let us watch Pinnochio, Swiss Family Robinson, and Robin Hood (the Disney one of course). All three of which are among my favorite films from my youth.

But The Red Balloon is not a movie to show little kids who just want to break shit. They will break more shit. Parents will be called. Oh yes, parents will be called.

Who from - the Gay Wizard brigade? Seriously, where was the the pressure coming from to make a fictional magical character gay? Did I miss out on some marches?

Anyway, so what if he was gay? His sexual preferences weren't relevant to the story at any point and therefore (correctly) went unmentioned. If you now re-read the stories (with this new knowledge) do they now become a tense thriller everytime Ron and Harry's get summoned to Dumbledore's office? Is their virtue in mortal danger?

The movie tanked due to the studio chopping the entire end off and re-editing other scenes to try and make it make sense. It obviously was a bad idea, so why are they releasing that version on DVD? It's pretty much guaranteed to do just as poorly as the movie (which lessens the chance of them being willing to release the double-dip director's cut).

MY vitriol and vulgarity? What's so vulgar and vitriolic about pointing out that Pullman is a hateful, disingenuous prat? How is that irrational? It's not. If anything, it's logical.

When you have read his works, you have read and listened to his own comments, his own confessions about his attitudes toward religion and those who practice it, then you should be able to make your own conclusions based on those facts. That's what I did, and they certainly seem pretty rational to me.

And I can defend Christianity just as readily as I can defend Evolution - without being hypocritical. At some point, both lack the ability to convince people in a rational manner. So both require faith. Is that a vulgar or vitriolic statement? Is that irrational? Hypocritical?

Just because you may choose to deride religious believers such as myself doesn't mean I'm somehow irrational because I don't.

And for the record, I don't deride atheists in general. I have no problem with people who choose NOT to believe in a creator. I may respectfully disagree with them, but they have every right to their opinion.

But people like Pullman aren't interested in letting religious believers have their faith without becoming targets of his derision and hateful rhetoric. It sure would be nice if you would understand that little tidbit.

There seem to be quite a few intolerant atheists out there (on here). Considering that one of the main criticisms leveled at religion is its inherent intolerance, you'd think people who want to criticize religion wouldn't exercise the same type of intolerance they so vocally criticize. Talk about hypocrisy.

Also, I am not a Christian, if that makes even the tiniest bit of difference to you.

The further I got into them, the more I wished they had been written by a better author. Pullman had some great ideas but his storytelling ability (or lack thereof) made the ideas suffer. Some of the imagery was great, and I loved the idea of armored bears, witches, fairy spies, and the technology, settings, etc. But the characters weren't likable, especially the supposed heroes. The interactions and relationships between the parents and the kids weren't very believable, and that annoyed me most of all.

The anti-religion rhetoric pulled me out of the story somewhat, but really it was a lack of cohesive storytelling that made me want to pull my hair out by the end of The Amber Spyglass.

Rarely have I felt so disappointed and frustrated by an author's work. I really wanted to be immersed in the universe Pullman created. I wanted to love the books, and I think ultimately (strangely?) that may be what made me feel so passionately that they were a disappointment. I am glad you liked them so much, though. I sure wish I had!

Sean Patrick Flaherty SUCKED as Indiana Jones. He completely nerded up Indy. There was absolutely no way I could see that kid turning out to be Harrison Ford. You have to have a little charisma to pull off acting like Ford and SPF had none. River Phoenix was great as young Indy though...course he was dead and too famous anyway for the show. The entire series was a bore anyway. And the fact that Indy met pretty much EVERYBODY that was historically famous at the turn of the century was almost as pretentious as an episode of Murphy Brown and all her name dropping. If you get the chance everybody watch the episode featuring a cameo from Harrison Ford (somthing to do with Chicago Jazz)...the rest skip it!!

you say that its okay to be anti-christian in a TB, but what makes you mad is that pullman made millions of dollars being anti-christian.

well hell, if you can make millions being anti-christian, then sign me up.

We all know Christians have found enough ways to make millions just being christian.
His Dark Materials

When I read the books I thought it was pretty obvious that they were written as a kind of anti-Narnia. In Narnia, the all the protagonists are good little boys and girls, and if they, like Susan at the end of the 7th Book, actually grow up to be real people, well then they can't get into the Heaven that follows Narnia. Lewis always said that Narnia wasn't allegory, but that the Narnia Universe was a Christian one, in that God and Heaven existed in it.

In Pullman's Dark Materials, there's also God, and Heaven, and Hell, and angels. They just happen to be frauds, usurping God in the Battle that preceded Paradise Lost. Lyra and Will are the direct opposites of the Pevensies, and IIRC they end up "creating heaven on Earth" by having sex. Pullman by his own admission saw an untapped market - that being a kind of alternate childrens' fantasy not beholden to ooutdated Christian morality, and he was successful. In His Dark Materials, God exists, but he's a withered old man that his blown away (literally) by the real world, and the being that has usurped God gets eaten by ghosts. Oh, and don't forget the gay angels, and "The Serpent" being a woman who's simply had and enjoyed sex.

Look, I'm an atheist, and I thought a fair bit of what Pullman did was fun (and funny, see the gay angels bit) and I definitely sympathise with wanting to create a fantasy series that's not so overbearingly Moral (even Harry Potter fell to this a little in its final book), but the series really just turns to shit. It falls into all the same didactic traps that Lewis' Narnia did, and it's nowhere near as inventive as Narnia ever was. And the less said about the inane evolution Horse-Wheel subplot the better.

Onto Harry Potter. I think it would have been better leaving a hint or two in the books about Dumbledore's sexuality and then not saying anything, because at it stands now in the books it seems like he's just a flamboyant dresser who had an unusually strong friendship with the kid next next door, and Rowling's comments about him being gay make him seem either like a stereotype (the first thing the reader ever learns about him is that he's wearing a purple cape) or like she's changed it retroactively. That's not to say she's pandering to anyone, because in every other regard her own morality for the books shines through clearly, but she obviously knew the uproar that Dumbledore being gay would cause (hence she didn't include it in the books) so I think announcing it so publicly wasn't he way to go about releasing that information.

Young Indy a nerd?

Indy IS a nerd... he's a professor and loves archeology. If you actually watch the show in sequence you'll see that Flannery plays up Indy's innocence in the episodes that take place earlier, and then he becomes more hard-edged as he goes through WW1. But Indy never had much coordination or finesse, and Flannery portrays that as well. It's like you guys think Indy's James Bond or something... he's not smooth at all.

is a prime example of diminishing returns- the first book was OK and thin, the second was half ok but fatter, and the third was bloated beyond belief and utterly unreadable dreck.

Boring, trite, poorly written garbage with long convoluted sub-plots that add nothing to the story. It is honestly one of the worst books I've ever read.

And pullman is a compete shithead- as much as I want to agree with him.

From your first post I did have you pegged as a 'Bible Thumping Crazy Conservative'. However since you've persisted in your reasonable replies and level headed discussion (and that kind of behaviour just wont fly around here) I'll take that back. Now you just come off as someone who has an unsually strong dislike for Messirs Pullman.

For the record I like both the Narnia and the DM books. Allegory and subtext (which I barely tend to notice) come second, by a long way, to a decent storyline and compelling characters. Although I will admit the 3rd DM book wandered a bit too much for its own good.

As for Pullman's extra cirricular activities I don't know much about them. I don't think I'd let them effect my opinion about his books though (unless of course I found out he'd joined the Gay Wizards Brigade).

Seriously, how did New Line come to the conclusion that Chris Weitz would be a good choice for The Golden Compass? I know you can say that Peter Jackson was untested and never had a hit, but at least he was nominated for an Oscar and his movies showed that he can handle crazy situations and that he is obsessively involved in the movies he makes. Chris Weitz is like a non successful Bret Ratner, he makes one small comedy that hits big, a decent British comedy and everything else has sucked. He rejected Tom Stoppards script, to write his own? Why because his Oscar nominated script for About A Boy shows that he is better at adapting books then Stoppard? He wanted to quite because the film was technically too difficult for him? Jackson has like a team he works with on every movie, not just his brother (who didn’t do shit for this movie). But whatever, you always know a movie is going to suck and not be a huge success when the pre production is littered with problems. I just want to know how they decided that Weitz was the man for this project? I haven’t read the books so I don’t know if there was an amazing movie there, but something with ass kicking Polar Bears, there had to be something. I guess after watching that movie about Robert Evans, its clear that once a producer scores a hit, they can pretty much get who ever they want to make the film. I guess somehow Andrew Miano convinced Michael Lynne that his man Chris was the guy for this. Miano and Lynn didn’t bother to look at American Dreamz are where like, AMERICAN PIE! I love that movie, ok here’s our company have fun destroying it! I wonder if the people that created the Coke Cola bears got an Oscar for this movies win for all there years of hard work developing Polar Bear computer effects, you know the team behind this movie had to study those commercials. I wonder if they got a special thanks?

Harry, have you seen Guatemalan Handshake? It was just released this week, and I didnt even know that until reading David Gordon Green's introduction for it (that apaprently accompanies the dvd).

I saw the movie 2 years ago, at the Maryland Film Festival and was quite impressed with it. Originally we just chose it because it fit a nice innocuous slot between two other movies, but it ended up being the best thing I saw there. It's a strange little film that follows a small community in rural P.A. after one of their own dissapears during a momentary reactor problem at Three Mile Island. It's a difficult film to explain, but for those who like combo descriptions , I'd say think Napoleon Dynamite meets The Twilight Zone. The cinematography and the very natural performance of the young girl who played Turkey Legs really sold the movie for me. Todd Rohal's odd humor and insight helped it along as well.

I'd highly reccomend it to anyone who loves odd cinema. It deserves to be a cult find, but right now it's relatively obscure. Check it out.
