Season 2 isn't as good as Season 1, but if you keep in mind that the Maya/Alejandro plot has NOTHING TO DO with the Shanti virus plot, Season 2 isn't all that bad.

I for one didn't mind the Takezo Kensei plot going on as long as it did, though others had that complaint.

As for West, if you look at him as a creepy stalker than a potential boyfriend for Claire, he's not so bad.

I honestly thought by now that the Heroes would have faced a collossal sized event like a new 9/11, saving thousands of lives in a big New York City battle with a big bad, like the finale of the Incredibles. I can honestly say I do not care what they think they can afford to show us, that's the pay off that I felt season 1 was promising and never delivered and to date I still think a big Justice League style team up is what this show needs to deliver. If it waits until the end of the series, I won't care anymore. Every season should have a powerhouse finale. They aren't delivering.

I'm a fan of Heroes, but I in no way have ever thought it perfect. In fact, I consider it a bit of a guilty pleasure. But, for the life of me, I'm not sure what everyone's beef was / is with Volume 2. Can somebody explain it to me? It seems reminiscent of everyone complaining about Lost in early Season 3. Which also made no sense to me. What people didn't realize, was that Lost needed those episodes to set up and move the pieces around in such a way as to really rick as into season 4. Is it not possible Heroes is / or was doing the same? Are we really this judgmental over a half finished product?

The Nathan/Parkman team up was cool, as was the Mohinder/HRG arc. Bob, Elle and Adam were interesting new characters. Adam was great as a Big Bad. They established the entire mythos for The Company. Anything with The Wonder Twins, Sylar, Monica and West and feudal Japan was a complete waste of time. It was not a complete catastrophe, and I'm sure if we had gotten a full season that we would have had a much better feeling about the season as a whole. We'll see this Fall, assuming a SAG strike doesn't fuck this season, too.

The only things I truly hated were the Telemundo Twins, Monica and Peter forgetting all about Caitlin being trapped in the future. There was a lot to like in Season 2 - especially Bob and ELLE, baby! I also really dug Hiro and Peter - who are friendly - coming against each other over Adam. Very nicely done.

all the stories out now are about how the "speedster" is going to be Hiro's arch enemy, and the Joker to his Batman, so I gotta figure he isn't going bad this season. I wouldn't care to see that happen. If Ali survives her soap opera cliffhanger, I hope she goes bad though. The only time I've liked her was when she was ripping people in half and fighting Parkman.

Everyone's got an opinion, this is mine. The feudal japan stuff could have been awesome if it was done with some kind of respect the actual stories of the era, or perhaps more to the point, the stories we've become familiar with... namely the Samurai films from Japan's golden era of cinema. If they're going to have a white dude playing a lengendary samurai they better take care to make it something more than a casting gimmick, and on that note their failure was complete and unambiguous. Nearly every storyline failed. The claire and boytoy stuff was brutal. So was teen copycat chick. There was exactly one really good episode, the one that tied up many of the mini archs about seven or so episodes in, surrounded by a lot of mediocre to terrible episodes. Lost and BSG had their down spells but it never got so bad that it killed the initial interest I had in the series in the first place. Heroes season 2 got that bad. At his point I have no intention of watching season 3... I suppose I could change my mind but even then I wouldn't give it more than a single episode to recapture my interest.
They need to sign some proper writers more like!

My Predictions For Season 3
by IAmMrMonkey!
May 9th, 2008
09:23:25 PM
Peter will become less powerful due to some extraordinary and cliched plot twist.

Hiro will lose more of the sparkle that made him such a fan favourite in season one.

The villains will all be rubbish.

More Dawsons Creek Lite exploits for Claire at highschool.

Another big setup for something that, twenty episodes later, turns out to be a big let down.

I'll watch every episode and then slap myself in the face again.

Hiro will have a beer and cheat on his wife

people people people, it's all about Bryan Fuller
by BadMrWonka
May 9th, 2008
09:28:33 PM
the moment they lost him, they lost the real edge of the show. they lost the cliffhangers that made the show great. instead of letting a really big "oh shit" moment marinate over a week, they let it marinate for 3 minutes, then said, "oh no, it's OK, everyone can come back from the dead."

Fuller would never have let some of the atrociously bland and uninspired dialogue from Season 2 pass the first table reading.

he never would have let the pace slow down that far. and more importantly he would have been able to more gracefully sidestep the truncated strike season.

bring back Fuller, save the show, save the world.

What this show needs.

His story was dragged out too long, but that's true of all of them. He bonded with HRG, and that made me like him. I hope he returns. I thought Bob was totally unbelievable as the uber-evil father, and they totally wasted telling us more about Hiro's father and Angella Petrelli. I liked better what was suggested about the older generation in Chapter 1 than I did in the Generations chapter. Also I wasn't very excited by Adam, but I'll concede that between the overlong stay in Japan and Peter's stupidity while working with Adam (never uses mind reading or phasing or time freezing despite being obvious times to use said powers) make it hard to judge him fairly. And I don't think anyone anywhere liked the twins and Sylar storyline. In general I think that season 2 stumbled by its tone, its pacing, and what happened with Hiro and Peter (amnesia, already, how new!).

What with the consistent excellence of other current serialized dramas, those HEROES writers have a formidable challenge ahead of them, especially after that near-disastrous 2nd season. A serial demands a lot of time from viewers, so it definitely needs to deliver the goods on a regular basis, the way LOST has, the way BATTLESTAR GALACTICA has, the way 24 has. With so many great shows to choose from and only so much time to devote to TV watching, who wants to take a chance on an ongoing serial that could be great (HEROES Season One) or could be awful (HEREOS Season Two)? That said, I'm willing to give HEROES one more chance, because of my appreciation for its first season.

The 2nd season curse

Heroes was always going to struggle in it's second season much like Lost the first season was a big success but ti's formula couldn't be used again the next year. This meant that whatever they did 2nd season was always going to annoy some people because change always does. The 2nd season of Heroes was inconsistent but nowhere near the clusterfrak people make it out to be much like Lost's 2nd season. Hopefully Heroes will come up with a more compelling and centered storyline for the 3rd season. Personally I think they are on the right track ideas wise but we will have to wait and see.

Time and time again they set up something... with no pay-off.

But they just keep throwing all their best ideas away...

This show was doing extremely well for itself, making everyone lots of money but they didn't appear to have the budget to pay off on the promises it was making. Or if they did, they didn't use it in the right places.

Hitting the reset button on so many storylines for Season 2 was completely idiotic as well. It was as if they were stalling until they could find a destination for each story. Obviously, a season needs a story before it goes into production, but that's not the way it came across.

I still have hope that it can be redeemed but they have to work their asses off to come up with a brilliant script and deliver on the concepts with a decent effects budget.

And I just watched the Battlestar Galactica miniseries and it was awesome. I feel sad to have missed the boat with that show. Time to catch it, I guess.

"It is popular, I must hate it!" How charming. By the way, I find it entertaining that you guys missed the entire point about Kensei. "Some white guy" wasn't the famous samurai. HIRO, not Adam, was the samurai of legend. They made that pretty clear with an exchange between Hiro and Yaeko.

I know a lot of people who won't watch Heroes (or Lost) because the hype turns them off. I know still others who hate it because they feel its a total ripoff of various comics. I'm just thrilled to see comic book style storytelling on the screen. Its had its ups and downs, but it's still really fun. One of the problems is that they drag through to many concurrent plotlines. During the second season, each set of 2-3 main characters had their own plot going. Matt/Mohinder, Peter in Ireland, Hiro in Japan, Micah in NOLA, The Telemundo twins, Nathan, Nikki, The Bennetts. There were like 8 different plotlines running from episode to episode. Considering that even Lost and BSG, two of the more tightly plotted shows on TV, rarely have more than 4 running plotlines, and even 24, whose very concept is based on multiple simultaneous plotlines, almost never breaks 4 (for their classic 4-way split screens), usually sticking to CTU, Jack, The bad guys, and one other group. The other big problem they had was trying to repeat the highly successful "slow burn" of the first season. Much like Lost's first season, they doled out information very slowly. But once things got moving at the emd, both shows made the mistake of slowing down again to try to reclaim the magic. Hopefully Heroes can correct that mistake as well as Lost has.

They changed the way the finale of season 1 was presented, didn't seem to care enough about the show to throw a budget into the finale even though the show was a huge hit at the time. Then they got the creators to change the ending of season 2, an entire season that was looking pretty low budget at the time. Obviously things in season 2 didn't work, but for the most part they were already coming to an end (one twin was dead, Hiro was back from Japan, Peter figured out he shouldn't be Adam's puppet). That doesn't excuse Kring. At best he had leverage at one time and still let the network fuck with the show. How much worse will it be now that he doesn't have the leverage of a smash hit? Reminds me of Raimi letting outside influences "force" characters into his Spider-Man movie, as if two of the biggest movies ever made didn't give you some leverage with the studios.

They come up with good ideas and interesting characters, but then use the LAZIEST plot devices and shortcuts possible.

They also spend all their time building things up and diddling away time on boring crap and either puss out on the stuff that should be exciting and explosive (season 1 finale) or show the lead-up/aftermath, but not the action (Kenzo doing his legendary deeds).

gotham_night, why you are 100% gay even though
by smackfu
May 10th, 2008
03:22:17 PM
you don't know it yet. Allow me to explain. You see, a heterosexual man should have no issue whatsoever with looking at another man, a good looking man, a man with his shirt off, and a man stark naked. Because if you make no sexual association with what you're looking at, it wouldn't bother you or make you uncomfortable. This is why most of us can look at say, a naked dog every day and feel completely indifferent about it. Because it's a different species, sexual attraction is a non-issue, ergo you don't feel uncomfortable about watching it's kit swing around all day, or seeing it's little dog-vag peeking out from behind it's tail. Because you don't care, you are sexually neutral towards the dog. So if you are made uncomfortable by looking at a good looking man, a shirtless man, or even a naked man (in such circumstances as it is reasonable and expected that he would be naked, such as in a gym shower, porno film etc) then this absolutely means your mind is making a sexual association with these images. It means you are not sexually neutral towards other men. It only *feels gay* for you to watch supernatural because you have *gay feelings* when you watch it. Here's a pro-tip. Almost all the tv shows they show on tv have good looking young male leads. It's a fact, people prefer to look at good looking people regardless of gender. If watching these particular 2 guys makes the show seem gay to you, it's because you probably have a little repressed man-crush on one or both of them.

On a pro Lost rant: For awhile here it was Lost vs Heroes, but obviously Lost won. Why? Lost is about the characters just as much as it is about the overall story. See what Lost lacks in moving the story forward it makes up by making the characters 3-dimensional and Heroes has failed on both of those fronts. So even though Lost S2 was slow with the story it still had the characters to fall back on.

Watching all of the new kids added into Season 2 was excruciating. They were all annoying and it sucked the life out of the core characters. I stopped watching after the black tear twins kept crying black tears in every episode. I don't even know how many episodes they ran. I was really getting into Heroes after season 1 came out on DVD and then they had to add those annoying siblings to the mix. They need to make every episode a huge ass fight of some kind and devote entire blocks of 2-4 episodes to one, maybe two characters doing shit. Then bring it together and overlap the events. Stop with the constant intercutting of stories with no payoff. Heroes is not Lost, so it shouldn't try to be. That Cheerleader posed nakey yet?

-Hiro burried Adam alive in his father's grave
-Adam, Matt and Nathan decide to give a press conference to let everyone know about them, but somebody shoots Nathan just as the press conference starts
-Niki is trapped in a burning building that explodes or something

If you want to compare Heroes to anything, compare it to OG Star Trek. Same kind of ensemble, same feel, same slight social relevance. BSG is more in tune with Lost, a show all about the narrative arc. Characters who serve said arc are rewarded, the ones who don't are killed off or minimalised.

If they can do it well, I wouldn't complain, but I'm not convinced they have any of the resources needed(depth of writing, depth of talent, effects budgets, etc). Could be a back door to bringing back the Origins thing, but it seemed like even thinking about that show took away from the main show. I'd like to hope that is more of a greenlight to plan some much bigger events in the future that need time to get things coordinated and done well, but I doubt it.
