The US version of The Office completely misses the point of the original by making it a slick comedy about a buffoon without depicting offices as the soul-destroying hellholes that they are; the decisions was made that Americans can't watch critiques of their own lives; shows that provoke uncomfortable laughter by pointing the finger at the audience. Imagine Peep Show made for the US: completely cleaned up; sanitized of its constant mental cruelty, sexual nastiness, foul language and mean-spirited inner monologues. Eventually, American audiences demand closure; happiness, success and the neat marriagey endings that eventually disfigured everything: call it Friends syndrome. I am seriously starting to think that you guys get a totally distorted view of yourself from TV. Seinfeld was cruel. Please. the only show remotely close to UK levels of loathing is Curb You Enthusiasm.

The same kind of outrage/horror was present when NBC announced The Office remake, not to mention Fox doesn't give a shit what fans think. I always thought that the premise of Spaced was the thinnest part--guy and girl pretending to be couple to get an apartment--but the execution past the premise was magnificent and what made the show. I don't think you can translate voices and execution in a remake. I think the only way it works is to put your own spin on the project a la what they did in The Office on NBC. That show is distinctly different from the UK version, not to mention it's cast and written brilliantly. From everything I had heard, this felt like a high school production of Spaced with new kids playing the lead roles and following the original scripts with some slight tweaking. That said, I'm sure it's a sad day for everyone involved in this US version since a lot of the buzz was this show was getting picked up in spite of the internet backlash.

The Office is a great example of this working, but it is by far the exception and certainly not the rule. Given the right treatment, this could have worked, but why bother? If they stick to the scripts then it is unlikely that it would be better than the original. If they don't stick to the scripts then its just another show about a bunch of friends sharing a flat and getting up to mischief - so no need to call it Spaced at all. This could only ever be worthwhile if it stuck to the inspiration behind the original - and the way the creators were treated shows that this wasn't the intention.

Lucky old US! 'The I.T. Crowd' is abysmal, right down there with 'Hippies' and yes, 'Coupling' too. British talkbackers have such a chip on their shoulder about British TV/Comedy, I think the novelty of being able hold forth on something before American talkbackers makes them lose all sense of perspective. Trying to generalise about how 'our' comedy is 'cruel' or 'dark' (therefore better and more sophisticated) is simply a waste of time, the fact of the matter is that 'Friends' (which is funny, and more mean-sprited than it appears) is really popular over here whereas Britain has tried and repeatedly failed to ape things like 'The Simpsons' ('Stressed Eric'), 'Curb Your Enthusiam' ('Lead Balloon') and, well, 'Friends' itself ('Coupling'!!!). How can you possibly pretend that Americans don't know self-loathing and then go on to namecheck 'Curb' and 'Seinfeld' (which is far more sucessful in the US than is over here)??? Jesus, people, let it go. It's dead. The Office IS highly competent, but it is smooth, family-friendly stuff. I don't demand sexual content and foul language in comedy but you KNOW that the world on that screen simply doesn't resemble real life situations in any way. Personally I love both. I love dark cringe inducing humour in TV shows from both US and UK deliver in spades. I have no problem with import shows or exporting... hell the more folks that see Peep Show, Black Books, Brass Eye etc etc then the better! Its just a shame that a lot of 'our' shows get remade for US audiences, and they end up as being abysmal. Just leave them alone! The Office proves that it can be done, and the results can be great, however I can't think of many more examples, yet I can think of a ton of failiures.

Spaced is kind of like the British TV comedy version of "Reality Bites". I'm enjoying it (three episodes in so far) but I don't see what makes it "classic" or "for geeks" -- I think there's a serious generation gap, though. I'm in my 30s, and to me, "Spaced" doesn't seem to 'click' as much as it does with mega-fans of the series. I am glad that a shitty American version isn't getting made, though. I really wish they'd stop doing the "American version" and "British version" of shows and just release a show on both sides of the pond in original form. Why don't the American networks ever run British shows in prime time? Why do I have to tune to PBS or BBC America or MTV (in the old days) to see BBC fare here? Can't NBC work something out with the BBC? A trade? Let them have Knight Rider and we take the original Spaced on Saturday night in place of one of the dozen CSI shows?

Pegg and Wright acted a little bit like whiny assholes? Yes, Spaced was a brilliant TV show and McG should've given them a ring. But the market will speak: if the American version sucks, it will get canceled and be an embarrassment. The American Office was surprisingly good and is still going. I’m not having the complaints that there has not been a classic British comedy in years, as the 5th series of Peep Show is airing and the criminally udnerated Benidorm (although this series has nothing on the first). And there's The Thick of It and Extras. Part of the problem is the fact that most British comedies do one or two series and don’t get repeated anywhere, i.e. – Catterick, 15 Stories High, I Am Not an Animal, Nighty Night (2nd series wasn’t that good) and so are forgotten. And Coupling was shit.

The real problem in British TV is the drama. Channel 4 always have an interesting documentary or two but they just take the easy road and buy a new hit US show instead of making their own. The beeb and ITV are doing more than they used to as well. Compare what’s on American TV now: Lost, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos, 24 to Skins and all the shit on British TV. The channels need to clean their act up and get some original ideas that arnt Doctor fucking Who. Comedy seems to be the only fictional genre we still have a National Identity in.

I assure you the cancellation of this has nothing whatsoever to do with reaction on AICN. Don't give yourselves so much credit; you are really not remotely as important as you believe. This was a decision taken purely on the merits of the pilot. Your readership represent s a tiny microcosm of the overall potential viewership. Your bias has been transparent for a long time now which is why the intelligent followers abandoned your site some time ago. Check out your talkbacks these days and one is hard-pressed to find anything approximating coherent discourse. Once again, don't be patting yourselves on the back too much. I'm also in my 30s, and I enjoyed The Young Ones. It's a bit of a geek thing, but it's more than that even. It's just good comedy. I'm not gonna tell you you have to like it, but myself, my wife, and even a friend of mine who is older and hates most things I show him, loved Spaced. To the point that after season 2 ended, we were both so depressed. It was such a great show, and we wanted more. But it ended the way it should have, so no real complaints. I can't wait for the DVD!!!

Stovetop beat me to it. It's not a generation thing. How can it be? I'm in my 30's as well and was in my late 20's when "Spaced" was originally on. As the characters were in their 20's as well. I relate to it now just as much as I probably would have then. Once a geek... always a geek. Have to disagree with your comment about the likeness to "Reality Bites". ehhh. Kudos for mention of The Young Ones. Bless Mtv for showing it back in the day.

Having watched both series of Spaced, I think that it's WILDLY over-hyped. I'm very happy to step aside for the show's fans when they geekgasm over it, but I don't think it's weird that you don't like it. Instead, I think it's a show for a certain kind of geek. For them, it's nirvana; for me, it's about as notable as funny (and as forgettable and unfunny) as, say, Three's Company.

I LOVE Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz was great. For me, Spaced is a good show but nowhere near as good as Arrested Development or Peep Show. I do think that it is great that you guys wouldn't even give McSpaced a "McChance". I know, it is hard to let something you love get bastardized. For me, it would be like watching Brett Ratner remake Clerks, but I would hate to think that I would blindly condemn it on the levels that the fanboys are. I once had a friend who refused to watch Shaun of the Dead because he was tired of all the spoof movies that were coming out and he felt that it was bastardizing Dawn of the Dead. Hewouldn't listen to me that it was a legitimate movie and that it holds water on its own... what if McSpaced does too?

Love British comedies, love Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, but Spaced wasn't my cup of tea. It was hyped up as the most compelling, smartest comedy, and it was a pop culture "Remember, it's just like in Robocop! it's just like in Pulp Fiction! It's just like in Scooby Do!" wankfest. Famous scenes in everyday surroundings, out of context, without any clever twists. I can see how "Who can get more pop culture references" can be fun for the geek crowd, and there were some bright spots in the five episodes I've watched (Really wanted to like it so I gave it a chance) but if you praise this as the "best comedy evah" you may start watching Family Guy too and praise the shit out of it. (Hey, it's full of pointless references too)
