Nope he can't just say it's misunderstood or a beautiful failure, no he has to declare it as brilliant and one of the best films of 2007. Hear that filmmakers, all you have to do is make an incomprehensible film and, regardless of quality or meaning harry will declare it your masterpiece. Ask Francis Coppola or Richard Kelly. Seriously Harry, I'm asking you, have you ever met a Lynchian trip into the avante garde that you didn't think was one of the most brilliant cinematic experiences of your life? Do you have any sense of differenciation in these matters? What makes me angry is not that you like them all, but you like them all on the same general level int he same general way. As if there is no difference between any of it because you just don't get it, and your defense mechanism when you don't understand something is to simply be in awe of it and respect it tot eh point of absurdity. It's total bullshit and I think it lowers the art.

Hi! You know, I've been reading AICN for about ten years, and reading the talkback off and on for nearly as long. Only now have I been moved to get a user account so I could post a message criticizing someone's useless douchebaggery. You are angry at Harry because of how you perceive he understands avant garde or complicated films, and see the need to rant at him. Do you realize that you can only be angry about your perceptions of what he thinks, and nothing else? So really, you're angry at your own thoughts. I think, in the end, the only answer to your problem is probably that you are a complete douchebag.

I saw the one skit where the sperms are working out in the guys ball sack getting ready for him to fuck his girlfriend then when the time came the little sperm who worked out and trained ended up first in line but was horrified to learn it was a blowjob thte guy was getting - all the sperms died.

Blu-ray is more expensive to produce than HD-DVD, which means that the studios are going to be way more careful with their releases. We're not going to see anything near the # of choices on DVD. HD-DVD cost almost the same for the studios to reproduce. Welcome to less choice.

And Wilkommen to this our world of talkbacks. Anywho, in part you are correct. I don't know Harry and my analysis of his psyche is based almost totally on my own perception, but I think it's an educated guess based on years and years of reading the guys reviews and the fact that every time a film like this comes out he pretty much says the same god damn thing. Not to mention running into many other "cinephiles" who either love or hate certain films simply because they are weird. Harry, clearly falls into the former category. If he didn't his reviews would have a bit more nuance from film to film. So I'm using a few different independent experiences to analyze the man. I'm a bit mystified though as to how any of this means I'm angry at my own thoughts or that I'm a douche bag. Explain.

I saw it about 12 years ago as part of a Malle retrospective just after he died. It's very good with lean narrative-driven direction, which is remarkable since Malle could have easily indulged in long-winded mediations on the meaninglessness of existence. I saw The Lovers at the same time and was very disappointed. It was supposed to be very racy with its open discussion of sex in 1958, but now just plays really dull. I’ve had long-standing affection for Malle every since that retrospective and to this day feel he’s underrated. I’m glad to see Criterion releasing his movies. I have the Murmur of the Heart/Lacombe, Lucien/Au Revoir Les Enfants box set.

might be the greatest western ever made. No shitting. It's intense like nothing I've ever seen. And it takes place almost entirely indoors. Which is pretty weird for a western. A must see. Anthony Mann was the king. Also, thank god they finally released Some Came Running. An underappreciated classic from Vincent Minnelli, an underrated director. Some of the best Cinemascope photography of all time and my favorite melodrama outside of Sirk or Borzage (when are we going to get some of his films on DVD?).

I agree with you on all these blu ray titles. Seems to me Harry will be any old crappo on blu ray for the sake of it being in HD. I think he should do a different section dedicated to blu ray. I have no intention of buying a blu ray player or any of its discs. I'm a little concerned that if you get used to the super perfect HD transfer then when you watch ordinary dvds they will look like VHS. I have a 32" HD ready TV and a DVD player with an HDMI output, thats all I need. Seriously, fuck blu ray.

Regular DVDs = good enough = you're poor
by SpreadLegsNotWar
May 15th, 2008
07:49:49 AM
Just because you can't afford Blu-ray doesn't mean it sucks. If you think regular DVD is just as good as Blu-ray you need glasses or are just a bitter HD-DVD fanboy.

I love it how HD-DVD used to be so awesome, how it was the future of home entertainment for people who chose it etc., etc. but now that they've "lost", SD-DVD or upconverting is good enough. Give me a fucking break.

And downloads killing Blu-ray? LOL, have downloads killed SD-DVD? Uh, no. No multiply the size of downloading an SD-DVD x 10. Yeah, get back to me when you have the proper bandwidth to pull down that kind of data in a reasonable amount of time. Downloading music hasn't killed CDs either and those files are miniscule by comparison.

If you're fine with your compressed to shit crappy 720p 5.1 Xbox Live download rentals, fine, but I'll stick with 1080p plus loseless audio. And what are you going to when, as is always the case, your hard drive crashes? Aw, too bad. Pony up for those downloads again. How about if you want to watch a movie at your friends house? Ooo, sorry, you'll have to bring your console over or whateverthefuck new STB you have. LOL, yeah right.

Downloading movies will become the standard, but that's not going to happen any time in the next ten years.

Blu-ray is here to stay, get over your bitterness for choosing HD-DVD or hatred for Sony (who btw is not the sole backer of BR) and accept it.

Dumbass. Poor you say? Well what about personal film tastes? You ever think about that? I'm into mostly 70s film including stuff like exploitation, blaxpoitation, grindhouse movies, obscure cult gems, and IF they are released on blu-ray ever (which I highly doubt) how do you think they are gonna look? What would last house on the left or texas chainsaw massacre or coffy or obscure Giallo films look like? Just cuz I'm not into more modern stuff like shrek the third (which is always shown as a demo in tech store shop windows) or whatever is meant to look great on blu-ray, doesn't mean I can't afford one. A fairly cheap blu ray player costs around 200 quid in the UK, I could buy one if I wanted, plus the fact that the discs themselves are dropping down in price quite a bit (but hey! Look! It doesn't have as many extras as the dvd release!) but I don't like the idea that once you get used to the image quality dvds will look shit. Its like when you were getting used to dvd quality when they first came out, VHS was the equivalent of a dodgy TV signal. Personal finance has nothing to do with it.

Sinatra Best in FHTE and VRE
by William Munny
May 15th, 2008
09:18:42 AM
Sinatra made his mark as an actor in From Here To Eternity - dramically, a movie that was ahead of its time. Von Ryan's Express is also a great vehicle for Sinatra, and provides lots of action like The Great Escape or The Dirty Dozen. The ending of VRE was completely Sinatra's idea - and he deserves credit for that.

Look I LOVE my Blu-Ray player and HD projector. However, some movies do just fine in standard DVD and I can live with that. I don't need Dumb & Dumber or Strange Brew or Kentucky Fried Movie in HD. Don't tell me you do--you dont NEED it. You want it, and you really don't even know why. You're just greedy with too much disposable income (go sponsor an African kid or something.) I can live with "selective HD" as long as all the right movies are on there. If a studio doesn't want to clean up "Sister Street Fighter" or "I Spit on Your Grave" for Blu-Ray, then FINE. Release the best possible transfer on S-DVD and my projector will make it look as primo as possible. I have 420p stuff on my hard drive played through my PS3 that looks superb blown up and upscaled on a 90-inch screen. Would I prefer Blu-Ray if it was cost-effective, yes. But I'm not going to weep over not having something like No Retreat, No Surrender available in 1080p with lossless audio and 2 hours of HD extras.

Harry can like all the stuff he wants, but this bs about MST3K "ruining" these old movies? I call bullshit on that. He is just trying to be "cool" or something by saying that. The VAST majority of the movies on there are almost unwatchable. Even if you watched them without Joel/Mike and the Bots, you'd sit there and make fun of them anyway. I just watched "MST3K: The Movie" last night - twice! Fucking funny. Do I have less respect for "This Island Earth?" No, but lets be honest. If it weren't for that iconic alien design, nobody would remember that movie anyway. Again, I call bullshit. He likes it, but doesn't want to admit it. Salo? Back on DVD? Is the Blu-Ray coming too? Wooo Hooo!!! Can't wait for that one. Finally retire that $70 bootleg VHS!
Youth Without Youth

I loved this film. I have to say it's probably Coppolla's most personal film to date. How? Coppolla been through some shit since his glory days. He's lost his film empire through one box office bomb after another and reduced to making Hollywood hackery like Jack and Time to Kill. I think the only thing that's kept him afloat all these years is his wine business. Now, Youth Without Youth delves into some pretty deep shit, but if you want to break it down into simple character terms, the film is about second chances. In this film, Tim Roth's character is given a second chance at life. A second chance to finish his life's work, the book, and a second chance with his one true love. Coppolla is the same age as the character in the film. I'd say the man is attempting to live his own "second chance" right now. Youth Without Youth is the filmmaker's own statement on life, dreams, love. His own life, even. In this way, it's probably his most personal film to date.

by Red Dawn Don

In the 1950's people were buying home TV's, so the theatre industry came out with WIDE-SCREEN theatres. 50 years later the Hollywood Industry is afraid of illegal downloading so they come up with big screen TV's and HIGH DEFINITION movies on discs (Who Blew-Ray? Not me.), to slow down the down-load process. Guess what they fooled you again. If the big screen owner did not have a 10 foot wide TV in his 15 foot living room he would be okay with SD-DVD (Standard Definition). Harry Knowles is exempt because he lives in a mansion of sorts. Man, I cannot believe it's been 10 years since FAS died, which is why we're seeing all these reissues. Unfortunately each of the box sets has a few clunkers in it. The Sinatra family has a deal with Warners, so we're only getting the movies they have rights to and not standouts like The Manchurian Candidate, Guys And Dolls, The Joker's Wild, High Society, and, of course, Pal Joey. The Man With The Golden Arm, Ocean's 11, and Robin and the Seven Hoods are all must-sees. There's also a new Sinatra/Gene Kelly DVD box set just released, too featuring Anchors Aweigh, New York, New York, and Take Me Out To The Ballgame. If anybody really wants to see some great Frank stuff, dig TCM this Sunday for A Man and His Music with Ella and Jobim, followed by Frank at his ring-dinginest in Pal Joey. Yeah, I'm a Sinatra nut. I'm a jazz singer from Jersey. Whaddaya expect? Ten years.. man, this calls for a Jack and water.

...at this point. I was in the LD camp for 10 years, and came a couple years late to DVD. I have a big screen TV and no HD. It's going to be like that for awhile. No complaints here. Until more interesting stuff hits BLU-RAY (and is not made available on SD DVD) upgrading is pointless. Honestly, I don't see Blu-Ray ever taking first place...not arguing that a better format eventually will. But it's TOO SOON.
Blu-Ray vs Downloads

Blu-Ray players are a bit expensive. I am not gonna buy a PS3 just for Blu-Ray(and if you buy a stand-alone player you are a fucking twit because the PS3 comes with a multi-core processor, gpu, hard-drive, wireless, and can also play games and is less expensive that almost all other players) because they are way too expensive. I will wait until downloads take off, which won't be long because rumor has it, new infra-structures are on the way that run at 100mbps. More than enough to stream HD content. Plus the content won't have to be saved on a hard disk, and in fact that would be the worst way of doing it. You would have a company with a giant server farm that you would have an account with. Once you purchase a movie, it is flagged as purchased by you, and you just stream it when you want to watch it. This also allows for the seamless growth of picture quality whenever a new television comes out that can handle more pixels. This is how XBox Live works. It is secure and consistent. This might not come for a while, and if it doesn't then I will get a Blu-Ray player. And hopefully they will have gone down in price by then.
