in the late '70s, and it was nice to see two critics discussing current films without the Gene Shalit/Rex Reed blather that was common on television.

But then he named Dark City as the years best film of that year. He and Siskel championed letterboxing and laserdiscs eons ago, and he sometimes went out on a limb for some geeky film no other critic liked ( ie, Weird Science ). He always was a movie geek at heart, just a Pulitzer Prize winning movie geek.

when Disney started Dicking around w/Ebert by asserting intellectual property rights to "Thumbs Up/Down" as a negotiating tactic. That's why it's been "See It/Don't See It for the last several months. That was a slap in the face to the ailing Ebert who created the damn show & phrase (at lteasat it's use in movie reviews). Roeper's super-loyal...he's doing this because Ebert wants it....and of course, because Disney was fucking with his friend/mentor. It'll resurface as a better show...hopefully w/Michael Philips. It's nice having the Tribune/Sun-Times rivalry back...and Philips is a good reviewer & personality...unlike EVERY other critic the Trib's tried since Siskel died.

Roger Ebert is the best critic out there. Just because you don't agree with all of his reviews does not mean that he is not an amazing critic-- his reviews are always well-written, and he makes you think. I disagree with him about 25% of the time, but I always appreciate his thought and wit. I hope he is able to talk again some day soon, but his written reviews are still the very best out there.

That's how he got the job, and now he pays the price for being Ebert's choice as a perfectly bland movie critic who wouldn't interfere with Ebert's opinions.
It's time for the show to shut down

Ebert had a rapport with Gene Siskel that he could never recapture with any of his guests or with Roeper. Not to say that any of the non-Siskel hosts were bad, it's just that lightning won't strike twice. The show was never the same. And since his surgery and his subsequent inability to resume his role on the show, it has lost its appeal. I have tremendous respect for Roger Ebert, and I think he has done great things for film and for the film-going public. Unlike some of the less-than-intelligent people talking back here, I don't automatically hate or disregard a critic because of a review he gave. Ebert gave some astoundingly good movies bad reviews (Raising Arizona, The Usual Suspects) and he gave some astoundingly bad movies good reviews (Garfield, The Happening). Does that disqualify him to review movies? No, it means he has different opinions than I do, that the same movie can strike him a different way than it does me. That's it. I don't think I've seen a single critic with whom I agree 100% of the time. I don't think I'd like one if I did find them. The reason I like Mr. Ebert so much is that his reviews are always well-written and always thoughtful. It's more difficult than people imagine to put an emotional reaction (whether or not you liked something) into analytical terms (a written review), and Mr. Ebert is one of the best. Do I always agree with him? No. Do I always want to know what he thought and why? Absolutely.
That sucks

I love Ebert. I Miss Siskel, and I hated Roeper at first because he was trying to hard. But I think he has a man crush on Ebert because when Philips is there he doesn't seem so eager to impress (though I can't believe he called "The Bank Job" the best movie so far this year). I hope he keeps his more relaxed tone When Ebert returns. And I hope this show gets picked up by someone cool. As far as the thumbs? Honestly even in the old days Siskel and Ebert admitted the Thumbs weren't all that accurate (in an interview once Ebert wished he could make a 'thumbs sideways') I say retire the digits and go for a star rating or a scale of one to ten. That's my thoughts at least.

Now hollywood can put on another all propoganda channel to replace them. LAME. Whatever you thought of them or the various incarnations of the show it was and has been a check on the quality of stuff that hollywood shits out. It was and has been a voice. Now the voice is gone to be replaced by a "insider" hollywood show where publicists and agentscan spin away and vapid shithead cohosts can rave about the acting abilities of hollywood sycophant faves like Jessica Alba and Brad Pitt. It was the only show on network TV and syndication that called out hollywood turds. No these reviewers were not getting free Blu-ray home entertainment systems or asked to tour the sets or watch the dailies of the next hollywood blockbuster.Thew were one of the last purely impartial voices on network tv. I think it sucks and I hope one of the more relevant cable channnels pics the show up. We need more impartial thinking and more critique with respect to the mostly shit that hollywood puts out and whom they deem fit to make stars.
Why do people want film reviewers who...
by Alonzo Mosely

just parrot back their own opinions to them. I hate this guy because he loved movie A or hated movie B. It is the same as the new age of news, where we all seem to want channels that just report based on our own political slants.

A good reviewer is one who is able to make original, well written reviews, that have valid logic in their conclusions. Even if they don't agree with your opinions. Film criticism was never meant to be about validation or being 'right' about a movie. It is a form of critical writing that should reflect the beliefs, skills and creativity of its author.

I figured it was a goner when Ebert got sick. Back in the PBS days this was a fun as hell show to watch. Not so much lately but still a soild show.

Christ, I'm getting old if I've been watching this show that long.

More f'ing gossip and industry 'news'. I'm sure they'll be covering Romanian cinema in as much detail as Phillips and Roeper did... Jeez, America is an insular small-minded place eh.

No, Ebert and Roeper have rights to how their names are used. unless they allow Disney to use their names, it'll have to be called "The Dingle and Tingle Movie Review Half-Hour Entertainment Hour"

A pretentious little prick who evokes Franklin Pangborn (character actor who pioneered a super-gay presence; at least Pangborn left a legacy). Roeper is a pseudo-amateur who is entirely bereft of Siskel's personality.
