Focusing on secondary characters

Episodes dealing with backstory of secondary characters is keeping the show fresh. Last week, Brock was the only member of the primary Venture team that made an appearance. Still an awesome episode. They've quickly made this awesome cast of characters. The Voltron rip was hilarious, the Thing guy flying an ice cream cone made me spit my beer out. Excellent. The show is just getting better, even if Monarch is becoming a little annoying.

I had personally thought since last season that the reason Brock was sent to guard Dr. Venture was because of the cloning, but this is good too. A fairly serious episode, really, and I liked the Victorian Guild.

Seems like this season is all about building up the mystery of what really happened to Jonas Venture Senior. They'll either reveal who killed him in the season finale, or it will become one of the long running never answered questions of the show, like who's the kids's mom.

The kid's MOM killed Venture, Sr. THAT would be a helluva episode...especially if Mom found out Rusty had actually "died" several times on various adventures...and Jonas had cloned "replacement Rustys".

Can you see Rusty Venture's face when he realizes all this time he's been a clone?!! And Brock being pissed off that he's been riskin his neck for a damn clone all these years!

Though I wouldn't call it a spoof, the episode was definitely goofing on the wild speculation that fuels the Da Vinci Code and National Treasure type movies. Also the old Guild looked a lot like the League of Extraoridnary Gentlemen, and the end shot was out of Christine.

Who was in the Victorian Guild? I got Phantomas, Col. Venture, Mark Twain, and Aleister Crowley, but who was "the fat queen"? Also, SamuelJackson1, I think the implication was that the Guild was in some sort of civil war, and that Tesla was on the other side. Since Tesla was in the Guild before it was the Guild of Calamitous Intent, he actually was a good super-scientist.

I am guessing that the next episodes will deal with Phantom Limb. Maybe he knows of the Orb from his family or something. So they have him established as out there somewhere.

I never even thought about the Monarch getting a hold of it at the end of the season, but the fact they've been building up a huge Monarch onslaught on the compound (potentially w/o Brock; The car taking him out temporarily would give a great window of opportunity for the Monarch)along with Dr. Venture stowing the Orb in the compound makes me think you're on to the cliffhanger of the season. Hell, Maybe Tim-Tom and Kevin get it insanity ensues!

And the Monarch's attack is immediate (which would be appropriate for the way this season's been going) you've got the default "new" Team Venture all gathered at the compound: Rusty, Hank, Dean, White, Billy, and Orpheus; plus the Alchemist (who as we've seen was an old member of a Jonas Venture youth club with Phantom Limb and Richard Impossible.) Granted, the only one with any use in a fight at all is Orpheus, but Rusty's matured slightly and may be ready to lead a "real" Team Venture. Which probably means Jonas Venture Sr is going to screw everything up in the finale. (Totally knew Kano was going to reveal secrets eventually.) Ahh, love this show.

The most interesting thing about the show so far is the transition of Rusty since season 1. He may not be as smart or cunning like his father or JJ, and he detests living in their shadows, but he has somehow found the courage to overcome temptation - twice this season. Maybe he's become less of a failure? Or, is the stage being set for his greatest screw up of all time?

I didn't for a second pick up that the guild were the AUTHORS of the League characters-- duh. I was thinking it was just using prominent figures of the era to parody the League. Color me dumb. I also totally missed the Bowie/Tesla connection, though I've been assuming that Rock-star Bowie is a "creation" of the shape-shifting Sovereign and therefore, now, perhaps Tesla himself who created a rock act persona in the '70s. Put me in the "last 3 episodes have been fantastic" camp. I think this season's gotten better every episode since Dr. Quimm. I ASSUME that Kano FAKED the assassination of Rusty's dad and his return will be the big reveal (is he another Bowie identity?). I love the idea that the cliff-hanger is Tim-Tom and Kevin with the "ORB" (which probably does nothing).

mrfantomashawk, Phantomas is Phantom Limb's surname. It's a reference to Fantomas, certainly, but the Phantomas family is actually supposed to be more like the Phantom bloodline. Thus, the purple suit, and the fact that they were a force for good until Phantom Limb became a supervillain.

Other characters in that baloon were exact characters from literature and history, Fantomas was a Victorian era anti-hero, a robin hood of sort thief for the french, who wore that exact same outfit, with the exact same mask. And he didnt call him the phantom, he specifically called him Fantomas. Its also the name of one of Mike Pattons bands (which had one of the fantomas comics as the cover to their first album)which is probably right up jackson, and doc's taste in music seeing all the other musical icons and references he's put into the show.

You're both right. "Professor Phantomos" had the family portrait up in his office in "Invisible Hand of Fate." It sounded to me like Phantom Limb's ancestor (I believe the family name is specifically "Phantomos" on the show, but other than that the family line is more or less a carbon copy of Fantomas with elements of the Phantom thrown in, primarily the line of succession) was already starting to lean towards some sort of villainy. There was not yet a Guild of Calamitous Intent, but it seems pretty certain that at least one or two of the flashback characters founded the first antagonist Guild. -- And I wouldn't worry too much about what Kevin and Tim-Tom would do with the Orb. They'd probably just stab it. With a knife. "F***IN' KNIFE!"

It's people doing the best they can to transcribe on the fly, for low pay, and not anything you can rely on for accuracy.

But if you've been watching all along you know that character was supposed to be one of Phantom Limbs famous ancestors and Phantom Limb's family name is Phantomos. There's obviously an homage to the comic pages character the Phantom in his name and costume and probably some nod to this other French character as well.

by sevenrivera

If the show has one flaw, and it's a minor one, it's that they need to expand their vocal talent base a little bit. As the number of characters expands, there are too many characters being voiced by too few people. The fact that Grandpa Venture sounds like the Monarch isn't a clue, it's a staffing issue. Same with No. 21 and Dermott sounding so similar. Several other characters as well. Again, it's a minor minor flaw in what is otherwise all awesomeness.
