MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL was originally slated for a release May 29, 2020, but was moved up by seven months to later this year, Oct. 18, 2019.
Variety says that at this new date MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL will be competing with the new 3D animated THE ADDAMS FAMILY, THE GOLDFINCH, ZOMBIELAND 2, and GEMINI MAN (a futuristic thriller starring Will Smith directed by Ang Lee).
If the film had stayed in its original slot, it would have had to fend of FAST AND THE FURIOUS 9, and another SPONGEBOB movie.
In the sequel, Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning will be reprising their roles, expanding on the story of SLEEPING BEAUTY’s Maleficent, from her side of the story. MALEFICENT became a smash hit, grossing $758.5 million worldwide from its $180 million budget.
The original MALEFICENT movie released in 2014 had its problems, but I really enjoyed watching it. There were some rather creative ideas thrown into the mix of an old story we all know, which became something almost entirely new on its own. The visuals were enchantanting to experience, the drama and motivations were understandable and relatable. Though, there were some dumb moments in there. In a time where we’re seeing remake after remake, I welcome a remixed story that has some new ideas put in there.
