Did President Trump implement a tariff on American steel – and precipitate a costly international trade war – in an effort to help weakling Republican candidate Rick Saccone win tonight’s special congressional election in Western Pennsylvania?
The 18th congressional district, which encompasses steel-producing Pittsburgh’s suburbs to the south, is Deep Red Republican, favoring McCain, Romney and Trump by huge margins in 2008, 2012 and 2016. But after 13 months in office Trump could be a lot less popular in the district now, and polls suggest Conor Lamb, a 33-year-old Democrat, federal prosecutor and former marine, could beat Saccone for the seat on Tuesday.
A victory (or even a near-victory) for Lamb can be seen as a harbinger for the mid-term elections transpiring less than eight months hence – mid-terms many believe could return both houses of Congress to the Democrats – and even precipitate the president’s impeachment.

NBC’s “Rise” is the latest high-school drama from Jason Katims (“My So-Called Life,” “Friday Night Lights”). “For all its flaws--and Rise has a number of them--when these kids open their mouths to sing, the NBC drama is nearly irresistible,” writes Maureen Ryan in Variety. “Rise is better the closer it gets to the kids’ stories,” writes James Poniewozik in the New York Times.”
“For The People” is the latest legal hourlong from Shonda Rimes (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” “How To Get Away With Murder”). “The largely unknown cast is fine, but they’re working with such bland material that it’s hard to work up much enthusiasm,” writes Michael Starr in the New York Post. “The cases they work are interesting in a ripped-out-of-the-headlines sort of way, but they're not given enough attention to counter the predictable dramas enveloping them,” notes Lorraine Ali in the Los Angeles Times.
