Freddy Beans here, with a semi promising trailer for Clive Tonge’s first feature film, MARA.
I’m simultaneously intrigued after that viewing and feel I’ve seen it before.
Basic synopsis for this one: Criminal psychologist Kate Fuller (the always delectable Olga Kurylenko) is assigned to the only witness of a man strangled in bed by his wife, their daughter Sophie. Somewhere along the line Kate delves into the legend of an ancient demon, one that may ultimately be responsible for this murder and others around town. When Kate experiences the same symptoms of the previous victims she’s looked into she must use her deductive powers to save Sophie and herself.
Honestly that synopsis doesn’t do much for me either. That said, the trailer wasn’t half bad. Though personally, I’d say cut the last 30 seconds out and it would work so much better.

Because it’s my article I’m going to give some love to Javier Botet (credited as Mara here) He’s sort of like the Spanish version of Doug Jones, that plastic-man actor responsible for so many iconic relatable horror characters. Javier has been in some excellent films in the same capacity:
Rec: If you haven’t seen this one you need to immediately, it’s an awesome horror film! If you saw QUARANTINE and thought you got a decent version of the same movie, you’d be dead wrong. See also THE GRUDGE and Spike lee’s atrocious OLDBOY.
THE LAST CIRCUS: An impossible to explain yet intriguing film, most haven’t heard of. It’s essentially a lover’s triangle with some bizarre characters and it tugs at the heart while making you heave.
MAMA: I’m not much for PG 13 horror movies. Like right when I see that PG-13 rating I write the movie off, yet MAMA ended up being more fun than I want to admit.
CONJURING 2: One of those sequels that might just surpass the original. If you haven’t seen either of the CONJURING movies you’re missing out.
And last but not least (at least for this article) Javier also is that disgusting homeless leper scene stealer in IT.
Ok that’s enough love for the man.
I will definitely check this one out and let you know my thoughts!
