The hero of AMC’s new series “Lodge 49” looks, dresses and acts like the Jeff Bridges character in “The Big Lebowski.” He’s severely underemployed. He has quirky friends, chief among them a fat bearded guy. But he goes by the name of “Dud” instead of “Dude.”
The mystery Dud solves in episode one: Who belongs to the ring Dud’s metal detector discovers on the beach. It turns out it belongs to a member of the titular lodge.
The series comes to us from one Jim Gavin, who has never before had a teleplay produced but in 2013 published a book of short stories titled “Middle Men.”
The agreeably meandering first episode is worth tuning into just to see the scene in which an animated Dud requests and secures a loan from an unimpressed pawn shop proprietor. The series has other virtues, including “Humans” vet Sonya Cassidy as Dud’s comely waitress sister. I suspect I’ll be circling back around to this one. It’s unique.
