The long-running war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has made it difficult to study and one of the least understood volcanoes on earth. Twice in recent memory it has erupted and devastated Goma. When will it erupt again? NOVA joins an international team of volcanologists on a risky climb to Nyirangongo’s summit and down into its crater to deploy sensors and monitor the volcano’s activity. This hair-raising expedition promises to shed light on the unpredictable behavior of volcanoes and ultimately save lives.

Join a team of volcanologists as they explore one of the world’s most active and mysterious volcanoes in central Africa: Nyamuragira. During a brief pause in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s decades of civil strife, an international team of experts flies by helicopter to the summit and investigates its secrets. Five years since the last major activity, scientists are eager to discover whether magma pressure is building up and threatening another eruption. As they explore the spectacular summit and gather scientific data, NOVA joins them to probe the mystery of what feeds this volcano, and the dangers it poses—both from lava and poisonous gases—to life and limb in the surrounding landscape.
