THE PRINCESS BRIDE holds a sacred place in the hearts of movie fans around the world. William Goldman's timeless fairy tale about "twue" love, noble quests, redemption, and the triumph of goodness and decency over evil and indecency has endeared itself to generations of readers and film fans since it's publication in 1973, and much more so since the release of the perfectly executed, instant-classic 1987 Rob Reiner masterpiece. It is, without question, one of the best movies ever made. The story is perfect, the characters are perfect, the portrayals by the actors are perfect... it's just... perfect. I don't know if it shows, but I'm a fan. A HUGE fan. Years ago, when my girlfriend and I started dating, this was the VERY FIRST film we watched together.
This story lends itself SO well to a musical stage format that it practically BEGS to be done. In fact, prior to his death, the late William Goldman was working to make that very thing happen, as early as 2006. Now, 13 years later, it seems to finally be happening. As reported by Deadline (https://deadline.com/2019/03/the-princess-bride-broadway-musical-disney-theatrical-productions-david-yazbek-1202583203/), the musical production is moving closer to becoming a reality! Disney Theatrical Productions has recently announced the hiring of composer/lyricist David Yazbek (Tony Award-winning composer of The Band's Visit, now wrapping up its run, and Tootsie), alongside book writers Bob Martin and Rick Elise (both of whom also currently have productions on Broadway: THE PROM, from Martin, and THE CHER SHOW from Elise). If this team is equal to the sum of its parts, the production will be in good hands.
